Video productions – make or buy stock video?

So you have decided to look for some stock videos you can use in your own video production? That makes perfect sense and welcome to the club. Are you unsure what you should use stock videos for and what not? Still, you make perfect sense. There is no clear answer, only good or bad advice I guess.

What you make yourself and what you decide to buy of stock videos is dependent on a few issues, and I would say the type of production, the distribution or broadcasting medium, the clients? or your need for unique storytelling involving actors or specific actions, your budget and the length of your production are all factors you should take into account.

In general, a video production for an external client requires some uniquely shot content ? and they are willing to pay for this. However, to make the story run and to frame it properly you may require some more generic video content, like the sun setting on the horizon across the ocean ? and there is no need they should pay to produce this shot from scratch. If you can save some money on this, then you can reallocate your budget and spend more on post production, graphics, animations and sound.

Based on this, a general piece of good or bad advice could be to plan to use stock video in your production if it means you can reallocate some of these funds to spend more on other aspects of the production in question. In this way, you should be able to save some time and money, while at the same time securing a better end result.

If you haven?t already used stock video in any of your video productions, then you should plan to use it for your next one. You may be surprised by the amount of excellent video clips you can choose from and by how easy stock video is to use.
